A Spurtle is a traditional Scottish kitchen tool.  We handmake them here in Aberdeenshire, from native Scottish beech, cherry and elm wood which we fell and then craft into a traditional thistle design.

Ideal as a wood anniversary, Christmas, or wedding gift or just as an unique and useful utensil for your kitchen.

The spurtle is a wooden Scottish kitchen tool, dating from the fifteenth century, that is used to stir porridge, soups, stews and broths. The theory is that the rod-like shape means that porridge can be stirred without congealing and forming lumps unlike a spoon that would have a dragging effect during stirring, and the low surface area reduces the chances of porridge sticking to the instrument.

The woods we use are Scottish cherry, which is lighter in colour and sometimes has reddish brown streaks or tinge to it, Scottish beech which is a medium brown and has grain and flecks showing through, and Scottish elm, which is a much darker and rich brown. We turn a traditional thistle type shape on the top, and make them in to two lengths so that they are suitable for different sized pans (many advertised elsewhere are rather long for comfortable use with a smaller pan).

We finish our spurtles with a tartan ribbon bow, just because it looks nice. We also include an info slip with every spurtle, explaining the history and function of the scottish spurtle (useful if you purchasing it as a gift for someone else).

On this item, several coats of food safe oils have been applied to finish the wood and capture the wonderful colours, which will provide protection for years to come. As with all wooden utensils, they should not be left soaking in water and they should be re-oiled periodically to keep their finish. We recommend our own Anyfink Wood Balm which we have developed especially for Spurtles, Spoons, Boards and more.

Our spurtles are available in Cherry or Beech (both light) or Elm (darker), and in 10 and 8 inch lengths (26 and 20cm) and are sold individually.

We also have a Limited Edition Rowan wood spurtle available whilst stocks last, featuring unique two-tone colours from the heart and sap wood - Rowan Spurtle

The display stand, pans, boards, etc shown in the photos are not included in the sale.
